Lutradur FAQ's...

What is Lutradur?
Lutradur is a non woven polyester material. At first glance, it looks similar to dressmakers interfacing, but its unique structure makes it almost translucent in nature. It is available in a range of weights; the lighter the material, the more translucent it is.

What Lutradur products are available?

Spunart always hold stock of the full range of Lutradur - Lutradur 30, 70, 100, 130 and Lutradur XL heavyweight in white and Lutradur 70 in black.

What colours does it come in?

All weights are available in white and Lutradur 70 is also available in black.

Why would I want to use Lutradur?

It is a truly versatile material. It does not fray, some weights are translucent, it can be combined with all other types of material, can be painted, dyed, distressed with a soldering iron or heat gun, glued, stitched, embroidered, in fact there are no limits to what you can do with Lutradur.

Who uses Lutradur?

Lutradur has been used by quilters, embroiderers, artists and teachers. It is also suitable for paper arts, such as making books, altered books, card making, Artist's Trade Cards (ATCs) and postcards. In addition Lutradur has been used successfully in three dimensional shapes and structures.

What kind of dyes can I use with Lutradur?

Dispersion dyes painted onto paper can then be heat transferred onto Lutradur by use of a hot iron These dyes are also available in crayon form.

What about paints?

If it works on cloth, it will work on Lutradur. A wide range of paints are suitable such as acrylic paints, Setacolor, watercolour sticks, inks or Koh-i-noor.

And inks?

Definitely. Pens and pencils, too.

Can I print on it?

The transfer dyeing process lends itself to printing as well as painting, with a suitable thickener.

Can I run it through the printer?

The heavier weights of Lutradur can be run through the printer without backing paper; however, because of its structure some of the ink is inevitably lost. We recommend lighter weights should be attached to freezer paper prior to printing. However experimentation with your printer settings is recommended.

How does Lutradur withstand intense machine stitching?

Depends on the weight of Lutradur you are using, and how you are using it. The heavier weights will take a lot of stitching; the lighter weights, if fused onto a supporting material, can also be stitched like this.

Can I use heat to distress Lutradur?

It is possible to use both heat gun and a soldering iron for distressed effects; it tolerates the heat of a hot iron in the transfer dyeing process, but if you leave the iron on the material too long, you can also produce a distressed effect, sometimes when you didn’t intend it. When burning Lutradur we recommend you avoid breathing in the vapours, working in a well ventilated area and wearing a respirator.

Can I use my embellisher on it?

Lutradur makes a great base material for the embellisher, but it can’t be felted onto other cloth.

How can I buy Lutradur?

You can either purchase your Lutradur directly and safely online using your credit card, or if you prefer by calling +44 (0) 1332 554610.
